Zinfandel
Shale Terrace, 2003

$ 38.00

Within the Scherrer Vineyard there are several different soils. One vineyard site, the “Shale Terrace,” is located on a relatively deep, well-drained, fractured shale subsoil. It yields wines with an uncommon blend of richness and finesse. This wine was bottled without fining or filtration to capture the beauty and personality of this particular vineyard site.

Winemaker's Notes

This started out life more like the darker-fruited Old & Mature Vines Zin. At about 12 months in barrel, it settled into the ‘tell-Shale’ nectarine/stone fruit aroma more decisively than any past vintage. While lower in acidity than the OMV, it has a mineral, nearly chalky note that seems to come only from this small vineyard area.

    Medium to medium-dark ruby; attractive, spicy, herbal, briary, red cherry fruit aroma with notes of charred oak and dill; full body; rich, textured, earthy, cedary. Ripe back cherry fruit flavors with a full, rounded mouth feel; well balanced; medium-full to full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Enjoyable to drink now. Highly recommended. 89 Points.
