Winemaker's Notes
Grateful for being invited to work with this site as it was being developed about 23 years ago, I gradually narrowed my focus into a narrow swath of this complex series of vineyard blocks perched in sight of the Pacific Ocean. Over the years there have been some changes in ownership and overall farming practices, yet I have always been able to have those practices customized to my own preferences. Depending upon the clone, Platt has quite a bit of mysterious, earthy aromas on the front end followed up by sneaky, pervasive fruit and then more mystery.
If color had an aroma, ‘light purple’ is what this wine smells like. Fresh and dried flowers and fruits, savory and slightly herbal elements show as well as a tiny note of freshly caught salmon flesh float along in succession in a beguiling way. Texturally, also beguiling as something so substantial in the middle palate finishes so delicately.
Sadly, this is our last vintage of a great 15 year run of working with this site.
Antonio Galloni writes: The 2021 Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard is one of the most compelling wines I have ever tasted from Fred Scherrer. Aromatic, deep and beguiling, the 2021 has so much to offer. Dried herbs, cinnamon, leather, incense, tobacco and wild cherry all build in the glass. The 2021 is distinguished in this range by its intensely savory, coastal character. It’s the last Platt Pinot from Fred Scherrer, and one of his finest from this site. 96 points.
