Winemaker's Notes
Over the past 15 years, I have had the great pleasure to collaborate with Otis Holt, owner and mastermind of Calypso Vineyard. Only 3 or so acres, it is a very complex and rewarding site that is, in my opinion, perfect for Syrah. In fact, when I first met Otis and tasted his home-made Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, I told him it was a Syrah site as I had seen these three varieties successfully grown side-by side in the past.
There is a nice savory-forward nose, much like Northern Rhône. While black pepper, herbs, dark fruits lurk, but they are surrounded by a delightful non-fruit elements. A good wine to insert into a blind tasting of Old World Syrahs, this will surprise many people and could win a lot of bets as to its origin. I’m just so happy to be able to work with this, I feel like I won a bet without even trying.

Vinous – April 2020
The 2016 Syrah Calypso Vineyard is one of the most distinctive wines in this range. Bold and deep, yet classically medium in body, the 2016 is so inviting. Readers will find a Syrah with deep fruit and intense mineral character. Savory, peppery Syrah notes are very much in the background. A firm backbone of tannin ensures the 2016 will develop positively for years to come. 93 points. Antonio Galloni

California Grapevine – May 2021
Dark ruby; attractive, forward, deep, ripe, fragrant, dark cherry and blackberry fruit aroma with hints of black pepper, smoked meat, and saddle leather; full body; big, rich, deep, meaty, dark berry fruit flavors with notes of spice, pepper, dried herbs, and mocha; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Forward, rich fruit makes this wine appealing to taste now, though best to bottle age for several more years. Very highly recommended. My Score: 92/100 Nick Ponomareoff
