“Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe…”  The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

With shelter-in-place orders pretty much universally implemented, things have changed for all of us.  Business wise, our core wholesale customers worldwide (mostly restaurants and small wine shops) are pretty much shut down. We had set aside wines for accounts who no longer have an outlet and can’t meet their commitments.  So, we decided to take these wines that are perfectly ready to drink and make them available to you at a very special price. Hopefully this will help ease the pain of being socially distant from those we enjoy being with.  [If you’re like us with an additional wine drinker (or two) in the household, the empty bottles reproduce quickly.]

A tale of two vineyard sites: Both sites are growing in Goldridge Fine Sandy Loam in the Sonoma Coast, very close to the sea, yet the clonal selections and rootstocks vary a bit. I think the climatic differences between the sites is responsible for the majority of the contrast between the wines that come from them. Big brother is more dark-fruited and earthy, Gevrey-like than the Platt’s hint at red-fruited Chambolle. It’s like a comparison between Ann-Margaret and Audrey Hepburn. It is an interesting and pleasurable study in Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

2012 Platt Vineyard Pinot Noir:
From the southern part of the Sonoma Coast, with an ocean view near the town of Bodega, red Fruits, maraschino cherry, beet, slightly savory, nice bit of woodsy, forest floor aromas. On the mouth it’s like maraschino cherry without the syrup. Well-resolved tannins still support the structure along with gently mouth-watering acidity. This wine is in a fantastic zone.

2012 Big Brother Pinot Noir:
Located in the Northern Sonoma Coast near the town of Annapolis (a post office, actually) while so close to the sea, there is less of a tendency for the cold coastal air to move past this site. Along with the tremendous air drainage it has at night, the night time temperatures are relatively mild during the colder part of the season.
Upon opening, there are black fruits, fresh loam and a slight sesame savory note on the nose. Rich and plush on the mouth, it is decidedly dark-fruited and has a seamless finish. The name is a hint at the size and scale of this wine, yet it is still graceful and tastes of Pinot Noir. Time has honed any slight edges this had to a sleek, balanced state.

2013 Russian River Pinot Noir:

The 2013 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has emerged from its cocoon just over the past months. I cannot think of a more gratifying glass to pop and pour before, during and after dinner. It is our main Pinot Noir and prioritized production-wise as if it was our estate wine.
