It perplexes me that few producers attempt this restrained, latent and food-friendly style. While it takes particular focus to harvest this unevenly ripening variety at the optimum time, the reward is a wine that stands right up alongside the typical ‘noble grapes.’ It’s almost like Zinfandel has become the elevator music of wine due to the generally elevated ripeness level most producers seem to think this grape must be forced to endure. This is the wine that really illustrates who we are and how we approach all the varieties we work with.
Zinfandel was where I started and had to include our ‘Old & Mature’ Vines bottling made from the Old Vines my grandfather planted in 1912 and ‘mature’ vines I helped my Father and Grandfather plant in the 1970’s. I selected a nice vertical of the six newest vintages we have in a meaningful quantity in case someone is compelled to come back to the well.
