Zinfandel
Old & Mature Vines, 2007

$ 75.00$ 150.00

This wine represents the labor of three generations of the Scherrer family — most of the vines that produced this wine were planted in 1912. It was bottled without fining or filtration to capture the beauty and personality of the Scherrer Vineyard. Although enjoyable in its youth, it should age and develop gracefully for 5 to 10 years after the vintage.

Winemaker's Notes

Yes, there is good cause for the excitement over this vintage. Very forward yet zingy wines are pretty much the rule this vintage. This is no exception. Upon sampling from barrel, experienced tasters have sometimes remarked how it seems like a well-structured, concentrated Pinot Noir. I just think it tastes like our OMV with loamy earth, blueberry, red and black fruits, white pepper and slight toastiness. It reminds me very much of the 1997 OMV at this stage.

    Deep ruby. Fresh red- and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by cinnamon, mace and dried rose, and expand with air. Tangy, finely etched red berry flavors are framed by silky tannins and become spicier and more floral on the back half. Finishes impressively long and gently sappy. I like the elegant character of this wine and could have been convinced that it was a rich Pinot Noir. 91 points. Josh Raynolds

    Medium-dark purplish ruby; attractive, restrained, spicy, smoky, briary raspberry bruit aroma with hints of cranberry and green peppercorn; medium-full body; herbal briary, red berry fruit flavors; medium-full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Highly recommended. My score, 89 points. Nick Ponomareff
